One of these aspects is ensuring that vehicles can overtake safely and traffic can exit the tunnel in the event of emergencies. SMART LIGHTING SYSTEMS
Need smart lighting for a tunnel, underpass or outdoor area? Nowadays, tunnels, car parks or building sites can be illuminated more efficiently than five years ago. Compared to conventional lighting technologies, LED solutions can easily be equipped with intelligence. The combination of LED with smart systems causes a LED light revolution. The new LED lighting is more sustainable, more reliable, smarter and safer.
The use of LED lighting reduces energy consumption considerably. For tunnel or site lighting this can mean an energy reduction of up to 50% to 80%. A smart system can dim the lighting, direct the light beam exactly to where it is needed and use sensors. The modularity of the systems makes this all possible. Dimming the light or using sensors also extends the total life of the LEDs. A long life, no light wastage and greater energy efficiency make LED lighting more sustainable.
For a LED solution we always opt for very high-quality components that have been tried and tested for many years. Furthermore, smart systems can provide feedback on the status of the lighting. The feedback report shows the status of the entire network, an individual fixture or lighting point. This way you know exactly when a fixture has to be replaced or requires maintenance. You can manage all fixtures from one central point. This is a major advantage with respect to ease of installation and maintenance. The high-quality components combined with the feedback of the smart systems increases the reliability.
As a result of intelligence, new functionalities are now in reach for the control of the LEDs. Every LED unit can be individually controlled in levels, has a temperature sensor and communicates directly with the central system. With the dimming levels it is possible to dim the lighting infinitely to the desired light intensity in relation to the outside environment. This dynamic control saves energy. It is also possible to opt for patterned lighting during a calamity, in a tunnel for example, towards the nearest emergency exit and so encourage escape behavior.
Unlike conventional lighting, LED lighting provides a natural and even lighting effect. As in daylight, it is possible to distinguish all colors clearly. This is a key aspect for the light experience and safety. Color temperature and color rendering also affect the light experience. Furthermore, safety is crucial in most applications related to light and infrastructure. Smart lighting systems increase safety by using detectors or by dimming light.
STANDARDISATION THROUGH MODULARITY
Our modular approach enables us to supply different kinds of lighting solutions. We use four basic building blocks for this.
Basic building block “Lens”
Together with the LED, the lens is the heart of a smart system. Every application requires a different light distribution. The lens determines the light radiation, which makes the choice of a good lens very important. Our building block “lens” consists of a 12 or 24 lens system module.
Basic building block “LED”
For the LEDs we use the best-known LED manufacturers such as Cree, Osram or Lumileds. These manufacturers guarantee our solutions, a long life and state-of-the-art technology. Depending on the application, it is possible to vary the LEDs in color temperature and color rendering.
Basic building block “Fixture”
Your application and your wishes determine the appearance of the fixture. A lighting solution can be integrated into various fixtures. We can design a suitable fixture for every application, e.g. a tunnel, underpass, car park or other environment. Think of the shape, color, position and length, for example.
Basic building block “Intelligence”
A smart system is required if safety, energy saving and reliability are of major importance in an application. Various requirements can be integrated into one system. With the feedback the system provides it is easy to produce an overview of the network status. This improves maintenance and ease of installation significantly.
When safety, energy saving and reliability are of vital importance to the application, intelligent solutions will be useful. The lighting solutions have therefore been categorized in different levels: manually controlled, autonomous and integrated.
Not every application requires additional information or intelligence. The lighting of these applications can be switched on and off and dimmed manually. It is also possible to set a timer. We call such a lighting solution “manually controlled”. It is the simplest type of communication, i.e. “on”, “off” and “dim”.
Lighting solutions for which the network status of the lighting has to be monitored, require a system. These are lighting solutions for which energy saving and safety are important. Motion sensors are often used to control this. A system with motion sensors can regulate the light autonomously and feedback information on this via bi-directional communication. In this case the system works completely independently.
Applications that require lighting solutions with a high level of intelligence often use multiple systems. These systems are connected to a larger backbone network and come together in one switchboard. Examples of which are tunnels that have other systems in addition to lighting, such as: ventilation, pumps, cameras, public address systems, signage, etc.
Since lighting is a subcomponent of the system, Meditronik d.o.o. & Agmi collaborates with system integrators. The system integrators provide the integration and control of several systems on a larger backbone network. A bus system enables us to connect the lighting subcomponent to an existing backbone system. These systems have as advantage that they are usually redundant. This means that in the case of a malfunction a parallel network takes over the control.
These basic building blocks make it possible to easily respond to the requirements of different applications. The lighting solutions can be tailored exactly to the environment, the correct photometry and luminosity. With these building blocks the foundation has been laid for Smart Lighting. However, these building blocks alone are not enough. Being inventive when dealing with the rapid changes of technologies and the changing needs of different applications is for us a must for Smart Lighting.
